November 2007

Hello and welcome to the November newsletter. Firstly, don’t worry, although the winter days are drawing in and the news keeps telling us about SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), the clocks have gone back, the frosts begin and the sale of de-icer goes up, we have lots going on to keep us all occupied right up to Christmas and New Year. Well done to everyone who took part in the 4 hour super session with Andy and Tilly on Saturday 27th. It was a huge success. Also a reminder about your end of year review and Christmas drinks evening, which will be held on December 11th from 7.30pm onwards; please all come along and enjoy the night, add your name to the list on the board by reception. Keep up the good work and the dedication to training through November and enjoy your read!

New website!
We !would like to say a big thank you to Robert Maclachlan for creating our new website.  Robert has spent a lot of time and effort essentially learning and building the site from scratch and although Robert has never received the coveted member of the month title since being a member, we think he needed a column of his own.  Well done Robert and thank you!

Comments box
Since placing the new comments box back in September we have had some fantastic comments, some of which we have acted upon and some of which are taking a little longer than expected.  One of the comments placed was that of bringing a towel into the club to use when exercising; we think it is a fantastic idea for promoting personal hygiene however it is something that is a little beyond our control, and ultimately it will be up to you as a member to respect fellow members’ wishes and to bring in your towel.

Super Session
Well done to Craig Beaven, Julia Ponton, Mary Beresford-Pierce, Debbie and Christian Shipp Tracey Osbourne and Eileen Grist for completing the whole of the super session on Saturday 27th.  Mary reported back to us: “I felt tired and exhilarated for the rest of the day.”  Keep a look out for news on the next Super Session!

Weekend gym circuits
Following a great response to our introduction of weekend gym circuits, we will be running these on a more regular basis. Please watch out for emails and posters advertising your next weekend gym circuit.

Gym assistants update
Focus on Fitness would like to thank the continued support given by our gym assistants.  You can see our assistants’ pictures on the downstairs notice board.  Having the assistants around has been a massive benefit to the club, offering a motivational and energetic approach to all aspects of fitness at the most important basic levels. Well done Christine Machlachlan, Miles Hider, Vanessa Fortnam-King and Gill Webb for guiding your fellow members and spending your free time supporting them - long may it continue!

If you have an interest in helping other members get the most of their training and would love to further your fitness knowledge please contact Andy or Ric about the next gym assistants course.

Tilly’s Nutrition tip

Beat the winter bugs, Blue Berry Smoothie Recipe

I really like this one, it helps me fight away all the bugs and germs floating around this time of year, I recommend it to everyone - Tilly

  • 2 cups fresh or slightly thawed frozen blueberries

  • 1 cup vanilla bio yoghurt

  • 6 ounces milk

  • 12 ounces pineapple juice

  • 3 tablespoons honey

  • 12 to 16 ice cubes

Place all ingredients, except the ice cubes, into container of electric blender and blend on high until smooth. With blender running, add 2 to 3 ice cubes at a time through the centre opening in the lid until all ice cubes have been added. Blend until smooth. Serve immediately. This smoothie recipe makes 4 servings. The dye that is released from the blueberries' skin may well be the most valuable nutrient the fruit has to offer. The pigments in blueberries and also in red crops such as cherries, plums, and red cabbage are powerful antioxidants. They have been determined to be a much-heralded chemical warrior against heart disease and also cancer. Blueberries actually have the highest antioxidant capacity because of their large anthocyanin concentration. http://ms.essortment.com/benefitsblueber_reka.htm
