November 2006

Christmas drinks
This year’s Christmas drinks and ‘Oscars-style’ award ceremony will take on Monday December 11th, from 7pm ready for a 7.30pm start.  This will be a fantastic opportunity to meet members who do not exercise when you do and, who knows, you might find out your neighbour is a member!  The evening also allows the team to review the year, highlighting member successes and introducing you to our plans for 2007.  Please do join us - it’s your club and your night.

New members for October
The team would like to give a warm welcome to our new members, who joined during the month of September. They are Sylvia Powell, Tracey Osborne, David Hastings and Rachel Brooks.   We look forward to helping you with your fitness aims and goals.

Members in focus
Well done Emma Edwards, Cordy Snell, Margaret Petkovic and Eloise Gordon for completing the 5 mile race at Badminton in this year’s horseless team event
Well done Chris Sorrell, who is well on his way to reaching his target weight, and training like a demon!
Welcome back to Kate Makinson who has already returned for her first gym session just four weeks after her second little girl arrived!
Good Luck to Hugo & Sophie Richardson who take part in the ‘long ducker’, a run from Marble Arch to Harrow - 10 miles in fact. Some of you may recall this family event which the Richardsons take part in; the younger members of the family have been known to complete the full run which includes running back!  (20.4 miles)
Well done Judy Maxfield for her excellent commitment to her running fitness with great results being achieved so far.

Member of the month
Michelle Ellis – who competed in her first half marathon (Macclesfield) and achieved a fantastic time of 2.05. All the hard work was worth it!
David Wreathall – who also completed a half marathon (Swindon) and beat his personal best by 8 minutes, at 2.03. Well done Dave.
Eloise Gordon – who completed the Badminton Horseless Team Event with the Whatley Manor team. Together they managed to win the business team award.
Ruckshi Watson – who has lost 10cm off her waist following a six-week shape changing personal training programme with Andy.

Sportz form sale night
Sarah Jane is coming to the gym on Monday, November 13th, between 5.30 and 8pm to sell a wide range of high quality sportswear and footwear.  Time for a spot of Christmas shopping?

Yoga with Paul
Paul recently completed his introduction to yoga and is keen to share his new methods of stretching and strengthening. Keep your eyes peeled for his taster classes.  As you all know, our approach to exercise, health and fitness has always emphasised a ‘more than just a gym’ focus.  We are really excited about these new services that will help improve our service in the mind and body aspect of fitness.   Andy will soon be attending his Tai Chi course and looks forward to sharing his new skills.

Blood Pressure week at Focus on Fitness
Well done to those of you who were brave enough to have you blood pressure measured, I’m not too sure what the panic was about for some of you!  Anyway, good news, for most of you the measure confirmed that all was positive in the blood pressure department. However, for one or two we were able to establish that some attention is required.  If you were not around for blood pressure week, and you would like to check yours, please just ask and we’ll happily arrange an appointment.  Well done all.

Running Club get together
For everyone who took part in Running Club this year, regardless of how many sessions you completed, we are having a get-together on Tuesday, November 14th – details to be confirmed once we have numbers. So if you’d like to come along to share your experiences please let Ric know ASAP.

Gym assistant update
Many of you will have noticed the blank space on the notice board downstairs awaiting photos and profiles of the gym assistants – have no fear, it will soon be filled with all the relevant details and the assistants will be revealed to you all!

They have all passed their theory with flying colours and all that remains is for them to get some hands on, practical experience with you – so please be kind to them!   Their role is to support the trainers by being additional eyes and ears around the gym – for example, spotting exercise programmes that could do with a review, helping to indoctrinate you all into doing stretches after you exercise (and doing them correctly), and generally helping you get the most out of your exercise programme.

Plus, remember they’ve all been where you are – and they are happy and willing to support you.  So, if you’ve never tried a class and would like to give one a go with a familiar face, or if you’ve never run around Filands and would like to try it – with some company, or even if you are just getting bored using the same programme on the stepper, and you’d like some new suggestions on how to use it – just ask!  Be warned - they won’t be backward in coming forward to help you get more out of the gym – just like they do!

Thanks Jenny and good luck
For those of you not aware, Jenny will be leaving us on Friday November 17th.  We would like to wish her well in her new job (fitness instructor at Champneys, Tring).  This is a bold move for Jenny who will be relocating across the country (sorry Caroline).  The boys would like to wish Jenny all the best for the future and thank her for her support over the last 9 months.

A word from Jenny
Thank you to all for your kindness and support during my months at Focus on Fitness.  I wish you all success in your health and fitness quests.
