May 2007
Every May we begin the newsletter congratulating our successful (hopefully) marathon runners. This year is no different, a big congratulations to Chris Hazell and Paul Davies who completed this year’s London Marathon. This year’s race was particularly tough as the temperatures soared into the eighties. That said, Chris completed the 26+ miles in 4 hours and 7 minutes: fantastic. Paul Davies, who was running with a colleague, completed the event in 5 hours and 10 minutes. Both runners raised money for their respective charity: Chris for Child Way and Paul for the NSPCC. So, change running for rowing and we have another pair of endurance junkies! You will recall us mentioning Andy (our Andy) and Kevin Bartlett were training to complete the marathon on rowers. Well, both were successful in completing this extra long row! Kevin completed the 42,000m in 2 hours 55 minutes and Andy in 3 Hours 25 minutes. They raised over £100 for the Cartmell Centre in Malmesbury. See notice board for pictures. Well done chaps. To complete this section of endurance events, we should mention the seven people who took part in Andy’s marathon class day ‘Spring Wellbeing Day’. Andy is leading one of the teams taking part in the trailwalk, where they have to complete 60+ miles in 30 hours. His fundraising event was successful in raising £200. Participants enjoyed aerobics, circuit training, and Pilates to name a few. Well done to Andy for arranging the day. I’ve been told by Andy that he hopes to hold another wellbeing day in the future. Thank you to those who attended and made it a success. See local newspaper for details and a picture of Miles! Thank you to those who have expressed an interest in the first aid day. We will contact you in due course. Member of the month Kevin Bartlett, Paul Davies and Chris Hazell – twenty-six miles on the road or on a rower is a fantastic achievement. Emma Edwards – who quietly goes about her training programme, has been steadily improving her fitness and following new eating habits, and has lost to two stone. Mark Clark – excellent reassessment results. Member in Focus Patrick Hall – who has now been consistent in his exercise programme for over six months, is now road running once a week, well done. Nesma Leach and Liz Lockstone – continue in the same vein, focusing on increased calorie busting; both have doubled their calorie output. Aly Sunderland - who has embraced the Focus on Fitness concept and continues to go from strength to strength. Good Luck Sarsen trail walkers who will be completing one of the three distances on offer: eleven miles, fifteen miles, or twenty-six miles. A list of members talking part can be found in the upper training suite. Bank Holiday We will be closed on Monday 7th May, also Monday 28th New Members for March We would like to welcome our new members for the month of March. They are Richard Griffiths, Colin Coupland, Emily Woodcock, Margaret Lufkin and Gemma James. We wish you all the best in achieving your desired goals and will do all we can to help. If in doubt please shout!
Ronnie is half-way through her training course, hasn’t the time flown? Ronnie is showing signs of being the perfect student, her theory results have not dropped below 93 per cent, brilliant. We have tried to maintain the flowers in changing rooms and around the club, however, they don’t really look the same. Come back Ronnie! Good luck with the rest of the programme. Ronnie will be in this Sunday 6th May if you would like to catch with her. Buddy List Member Sheila Clemett has been involved in constructing a list of local (and not so local) fitness events which should help inspire all members to try a new challenge and enjoy the great outdoors, at some point this year. See the notice board downstairs for details.
Our new lunchtime class will be held on Wednesdays from midday to 1pm. Please approach any of the team to book your place. Gas explosion in Malmesbury As you have probably read the explosion shook the whole town. Our thoughts go out to member John Nichols, who was one of the next door neighbours who unfortunately is losing his house as a result.
Following the enthusiasm shown by last year’s running club participants we have decided to start this year’s training sessions one month earlier! Wednesday May 2nd was the beginning of this season’s sessions, which started ‘very gently’! The running club was created to encourage those who enjoy outdoor exercise to give jogging / running a try. It has been an interesting journey, finding parks, school fields (they keep building houses), in fact anywhere a group of novice runners can come together and learn the basics of how to start or improve their running. You DO NOT have to be a runner. The club caters for all, and with sessions happening every other week it shouldn’t impact you too much. If you would like to come and give the sessions a try please let one of us know or email info@focusonfitness.uk.com non-members are welcome to the session at £5.50 per session. The next session will take place on Wednesday 16th May from 6.30 – 7.30, meet at the club. Trailwalker website donation page Thank you for all donations made towards the Trailwalker event so far. Andy has started a new donations page for all those who would like to donate via the internet. For more information log onto www.bmycharity.com/teamfocusonfitness |
