March 2007
I seem to recall a sports agent in a film shouting 'help me help you (Jerry Maguire). Well, we're doing the same. Some of you may remember there was a lot of talk about the possibility of double yellow lines outside our front doors in Station Road. Well, the subject is back on the agenda and this time is looks like it could be serious. Having spoken to the organisation compiling the plans, their suggestion is for us to keep our eyes peeled to the press late March/early April as the proposal goes to consultation. At that time we will be able to put our case forward. As you will know Malmesbury has been blessed with a failing leisure centre for some years now, yet it continues to be bailed out and yes there is free parking! As members, your commitment to support local business (us) and take your health and wellbeing into your own hands thus reducing the strain on the local surgeries and NHS services should be applauded, and you should not be penalised. I have never challenged council proposals, so truthfully I am in uncharted waters. My plans are to create an alliance with other businesses on Station Road and ask you to sign a petition against the plans. If you have other more successful ways in which we could approach this challenge I would love to hear from you. Thank you for your support. Ric
Gill and Richard Webb who are currently enjoying the first couple of weeks with their new baby boy Elliot Henry Webb. All are doing fantastically well, Gill you look great. Richard, you look tired! In fact I think Elliot probably broke the record for the youngest ever Focus on Fitness attendee! Well done guys we're delighted for you.
February continued in the same vain as January with excellent daily attendances, a number of you experiencing once in a lifetime achievements. This leads us onto this months:
Members of the month Sheila Clemett - Yes, our member of the year (2006) continues to push herself. She completed the Bourton on the Water 10k run. This was a real achievement as Sheila does not find running the easiest hobby she has! In fact she suggested that might be the first and last time she runs six miles!
Alison Cowie - Also successful in completing the Bourton on the Water 10k, a little more practiced than Sheila, Alison completed the run well under 60 minutes. Well done. Pictures of Sheila and Alison are available on the website www.focusonfitness.uk.com
Jackie Ikin - Has been working on her personal goal of running outside, she has come on in leaps and bounds from the person who wouldn't run in case she lost her balance and fell! Jackie completed her first 3 mile run. No stopping and definitely no falling. Well done Jackie.
Good Luck To all Bath half marathon runners. We're actually not sure who is running this year's event! Please let us know if you're intending to run this year's event.
Jeanna Ind has endured a hard month of training, getting back to a full programme consisting of classes, flexibility, cardio vascular and resistance training. Keep it up.
Mike "the board" Foord, who, like many male members, needs to work on his flexibility, has shown positive commitment to do so. Well done Mike.
Julia Ponton has made a fantastic start to the new year - regular class attendances and personal bests on the rower.
John Parfitt has experienced some wonderful reassessment results, these were achieved through a thorough exercise plan and a rigorous eating (not drinking) plan. Well done John.
Kevin Bartlett and Andy MaGlashan have teamed up to complete a marathon on the rowing machines on the day of the London marathon. This 'mad3 event will take somewhere between 3.30 - 4.00 hours to complete. So if you were wondering where the nice soft seat pads on the rowers came from look no further then Kevin, thanks Kevin! They are considering their chosen charity, but have always suggested they are not comfortable in asking for money. There will be some Andy and Kevin 'money buckets' around the club if you would like to support them they will I'm sure be grateful.
Vanessa Fortnam - King encouraged members to attend the Malmesbury ball as a Focus on Fitness table. Thank you Vanessa, we heard the evening was good fun, table dancing and other bits we probably shouldn't discuss! Pictures available on the website www.focusonfitness.uk.corn
Back to School for Ronnie - good luck We would like to wish Ronnie all the best when she heads to Premier to begin her training course (March 26th). Ronnie has made a phenomenal start to her career with Focus on Fitness, Not only has she added flowers to the changing rooms! She has also supported lots of members in their training programmes, as well as coaching / supporting Sheila to completing her 10k. Ronnie went along to Bourton! You'll knock ‘em down!
New members for February We would like to welcome our new members for the month of February. They are Catherine Bonner, Mary Beresford-Piers, Chris Hazell and the return of Gordon Williams and Alison Sunderland; we wish you all the best in achieving your desired goals and will do all we can to help. If in doubt please shout!
As part of our commitment to you and our service to you, we have managed to secure preferential rates in using Whatley Manor Spa. You may be aware of the luxury facility which is located close to Malmesbury and boasts a thalassotherapy pool, exotic treatments and a wonderfully calming environment. Unfortunately, these are services which we are never going to be able to offer. However, they and the relaxed environment, we believe complement a professional exercise programme. Should you be interested in using the Spa for a day or purchasing a voucher for a loved one please contact Ric.
