June 2007

Happy 10th Birthday Focus on Fitness!

We will be celebrating our anniversary this year by holding a hog roast evening.  We look forward to thanking all of our members old and new for having an involvement in the club over the last ten years and making it as successful as they have.  The evening will start at 7pm on Saturday 1st September so make some space in your diaries!

Members of the month
David Hussey – Well done on losing one stone in 6 months; the journey can be long but here’s proof you can get there!
Mary Beresford-Peirse – Mary doubled her flexibility score in 3 months by attending Paul’s chi yoga class just once per week, now that is excellent!
Margaret Lufkin – After joining the gym after a broken leg three weeks prior, Margaret’s progress has been steady due to her commitment to her routines. Well done!

Get well soon Christine!
Christine Maclachlan as undergone surgery for her knee and is now exercising her way to recovery.  Our gym assistant has even found the time to inspire and motivate others during this time, fantastic!

Members in focus
Stephen Makinson - A member of six years Stephen, has really increased his attendance over the last six months and within that time he is using both gym circuits to really motivate him.  Stephen is starting to see and feel some real results!
Judy Maxfield and Trina Masters – Both took part in the Pewsey 10km and achieved great times considering this was their first ever 10km.  Well done!
New members for May
We would like to welcome our new members for the month of May.  They are Kat Taylor, Alison Palmer, Guy Crick, Gail Sturgis and Anna Grange.  We wish you all the best in achieving your desired goals and will do all we can to help.  If in doubt, please shout!

Running Club is a success
Wednesday May 2nd was the beginning of this season’s sessions, which started ‘very gently’!  The running club was created to encourage those who enjoy outdoor exercise to give jogging / running a try.   You DO NOT have to be a runner. The club caters for all, and with sessions happening every other week it shouldn’t impact on you too much.  If you would like to come and give the sessions a try please let one of us know or email info@focusonfitness.uk.com Non-members are welcome to the session at £5.50 per session.  The sessions for June place on Wednesday 13th and 27th from 6.30 – 7.30, meet at the club.

New Chi Yoga class
Our new lunchtime class began on Wednesday 6th June; from midday to 1pm. Please approach any of the team to book your place.

Congratulations!
Phil Taylor and Hannah Connolly were married on Friday 25th May.  We wish them well.
Rachel Tanner cycles across India
Rachel Tanner will be cycling 390kms over a period of five days to raise funds for the charity Women for Women later this year.  Rachel is holding a silent auction with some fantastic prizes including two personal training sessions at your very own health and well being club.  More information on the cycling and the auction can be found in the upper training suite.  Good luck with your training Rachel!

Note on stress relief
The word stress has become very commonly used in this very technological society in which we now live.

Looking at stress from a positive angle, pressure allows us to grow.
Without a certain amount of pressure in our lives, we tend to not feel challenged,to not take risks and to perhaps not realise the potential we have to go beyond our everyday experience of ourselves into limits extending beyond our everyday mind.

We still possess the same body design, with few modifications, that our
ancestors had and the same abilities for survival. However, we live in a
different environment and with a vastly different lifestyle, especially those of us
who live in a materially developed country. Very little of our physical potential
for survival is required and utilised and the tendency is towards a less physical
lifestyle. Thus we are all in possession of a wonderful living machine that is
under-used and often neglected in the living patterns of today’s world.
However, this living machine is also vital to the health and support of the brain
and all our intellectual functions and to neglect the proper care of the body is to
neglect the care of the brain.

In order to compensate for the lack of essential physical activity required for survival in our lives, it is necessary to find an alternative and it is this that we refer to as exercise.

Failure to accept these physical requirements and to adequately fulfil
them will result in stress and tension and consequently ill-health. We will find
also that certain forms of physical activity provide much more than
physiological efficiency, and that a wide range of emotional and intellectual
needs can be catered for in the pursuit of exercise. In fact, the development of a whole and balanced person is dependent on the integration of some form of
physical activity or exercise into daily life.

Well done
Sarsen trail walkers who completed one of the three distances on offer: eleven miles, fifteen miles and twenty-six miles.
