December 2006

The end of another year!
Well not quite.  Let’s see out the rest of December before we get stuck into 2007!  Once again Focus on Fitness members have had a phenomenal year, raising money for a wide range of charities.  Personal achievement continues to be the main ingredient that most of our members experience.  We think you have been fantastic and, thankfully, it looks like next year will continue in the same vain.  With a number of members planning various challenges (some as far a field as INDIA!) we will endeavour to support you however we can.  Note to the trainers, NO you can’t go to India for a week!

Our annual Christmas drinks and ‘Oscars-style’ award ceremony will take place on Monday 11th December, from 7pm ready for a 7.30pm start.  This will be a fantastic opportunity to meet members who do not exercise when you do and, who knows, you might find out your neighbour is a member!  The evening also allows the team to review the year, highlighting member successes and introducing you to our plans for 2007.  Please do join us - it’s your club and your night.

New members for November
The team would like to give a warm welcome to our new members who joined during the month of November.  They are Tony Watson, Christine Jamieson, Marie Coupland, Norma Shale, Celia Rose and Nigel Pyman.  We look forward to helping you with your fitness aims and goals.

Members in focus
Well done - Ann Roberts-Phare who has once again been crowned Malmesbury Ladies’ Bowls Champion.  That along with winning a ladies’ handicap competition.  Well done Ann.   Well done - Roger McEwen and Jane Henderson both have shown fantastic commitment in their first few months of being members.  You’re both doing great.  Keep it up.
Get well soon - Jacqui Ponting who is recovering from a minor operation.
Well done - Basil Miles who is working his way back to full fitness.  Keep up the good work.
Welcome back - Patrick Hall has returned to his full exercise regime after some time off.  Keep it going.
Kit Harding - with his ‘increased intensity’ programme, Kit has made excellent progress on his cardiovascular fitness, smashing his personal best on the rower.

Member of the month
Chris Sorrell - who has achieved fantastic results in two months - 8kg of weight loss, seven 7 inches off, which came from his waist!  Chris is now focusing on maintaining his success.
Nesma Leach - Fantastic effort during November.  Keep it up.
Sophie Richardson - has been in inspiring form!  Committing to her new exercise programme
Jackie Ikin & Paula Hall - who have both been challenging themselves on a weekly basis improving their running distances with the support of Ronnie (gym assistant).   Jackie is running for a mile outside and Paula continues to improve her times and distances.  Well done all.

Need a Christmas present?
Yes, we all have pressies to buy for those who “have it all”!  Why not buy them something that might help ease a stressful day, a wonderful relaxing massage or even some personal training sessions?  Perhaps go the whole hog and buy them a membership?  If you are stuck for ideas I’m sure we can arrange something special, just ask.

Yoga with Paul
Paul’s taster sessions will be taking place on Tuesday 19th December from 6.30-7.30 replacing the usual circuit class as well as running a daytime session on Monday 18th December from 10.30-11.30 replacing the bums, tums and thighs class.  Book your place now!  The taster sessions will be free of charge for members and £5.00 for non members.

Christmas hours
Our opening hours between Wednesday 27th December to Friday 29th will be 8am to 8pm.  Saturday and Sunday will be as normal 8am to 1pm.  After the Christmas festivities the club will be open as normal on Tuesday 2nd January.  A revised class schedule will be published nearer the time.

New Stuff for 2007
2007 is already shaping up into a focused and motivated year.  New classes: Chi Yoga, Tai Chi and a return of the back club.  But for those of you who require some direction for the year ahead why not come along to Ric’s ‘Breakthrough into 2007’ presentation.  On Wednesday 3rd January at 7.30, Ric will host a fun evening where you will NOT require your exercise kit or a bottle of water.  In fact, the evening might just make 2007 your best year ever!  See notice boards for more information.

What else is and has been going on?
After close to ten years with NO web site we are well on the way to creating a site which will not only enable potential members to understand the Focus on Fitness ethos but also give you the ability to stay up to date with events, newsletters and class timetables.  We hope  to have a members’ notice board which will help you work with other like-minded members, perhaps arrange training sessions, find a running partner, ask a member what the Monday Step ‘n’ tone class is really like!  I would like to thank Robert MacLachlan, David Wreathall, Sheila Clemett and Christine MacLachlan who all got the ball rolling with this project.  Keep your eyes peeled as we are continually adding more pages.  www.focusonfitness.uk.com David Forward, our web site designer, has been responsible for a number of local sites including Malmesbury memories and Malmesbury museum.  Log on for more information.

We are looking for more member quotes which enable new ‘nervous’ members to have confidence that they too can be successful in achieving their goals and objectives.  These can be handwritten or emailed; your words of encouragement might just inspire someone to make a positive life changing step!  Thanks.

Spreading the exercise message to children
Well done Andy who has been working hard to encourage young school children in Malmesbury to keep fit.  As you know, schools’ curriculums have changed dramatically over the years “it’s not like it used to be!”  The amount of physical education has reduced considerably to the extent that some children don’t take part in any physical activity!  Andy has been guiding three different groups of children through a range of aerobics, toning and flexibility.  In fact, one or two of our members have had conversations about a “Fit young man who comes to take our aerobics class!”  Andy says “Listening to our members go on about how little coordination they have and that they’re all too old to do studio classes is interesting.  Most of the children have LESS coordination and tend to tire very quickly!  On the positive side they only have to repeat it a few times and they soon pick it up.  They are very rewarding sessions.”
